Airtable is a database that looks like a spreadsheet. You build tables of records, link them, and layer on views, forms, automations, and interfaces until you have a small app: a content calendar, a hiring pipeline, an inventory tracker, a grant register. That core product is what you are buying. The AI, which this review focuses on, is a set of features built into that structure.
Three of them matter. AI fields run a prompt against every record, so a column can summarize a support ticket, classify a lead, extract a due date from an email, or translate a description. Omni is a chat interface for building and changing the app itself: describe the tracker you want and it creates the tables, fields, and interfaces. And agents run multi-step work per record, such as researching a company on the web and drafting an outreach note into a field.
Where Airtable's AI beats a chat assistant is repeatability: the same prompt runs on a thousand records with the result stored next to the data. Where it fails is the same place: a slightly wrong prompt produces a thousand slightly wrong answers, billed in credits. Start with one field on twenty records and read every output.
Best for
- Operations managers who run tracking systems in spreadsheets and have outgrown them
- Marketers managing content calendars and campaign assets who want AI to draft, tag, and summarize per record
- Project managers coordinating intake requests and status across teams without a heavyweight PM tool
- Small-business owners and nonprofit professionals who need a CRM, inventory, or donor tracker they can build themselves
- Product managers triaging feedback, where an AI field can categorize and summarize each submission as it arrives
Not ideal for
- Heavy numerical modeling; Excel and Google Sheets are still better at formulas, pivots, and charts
- Large-scale transactional data or anything needing a real database with strict schema and performance guarantees
- Regulated data such as PHI or payment details, unless your organization has an enterprise agreement and has reviewed the AI data handling
Key features
Pricing
A free plan with caps on records, attachments, and automations, and a small taste of AI; paid Team and Business tiers billed per seat that raise the limits and include a monthly AI credit allowance; and an Enterprise Scale plan with admin, security, and larger AI allowances. Airtable has changed how AI is packaged more than once; check the vendor's current plan page.
Every AI field run and agent action consumes credits, and a field set to regenerate on change re-runs whenever a linked value updates. Test on a small view before enabling it on a full table.

Pros and cons
Pros
- AI fields make batch work repeatable: one good prompt, applied to every record, stored as data you can filter and report on
- Omni gets a usable tracker built from a description in minutes, which lowers the barrier for non-technical builders
- Interfaces let AI output reach people as a clean app rather than a spreadsheet
- Deep automation and integration options mean AI results flow into email, Slack, and other systems
Cons
- Per-seat pricing plus credit-metered AI gets expensive, and it is hard to predict the AI bill before you have run it
- AI field errors are silent and scale with your data; a misclassified lead looks identical to a correct one
- Omni-built apps need cleanup: odd field types, missing links between tables, and interfaces that look right and behave wrong
- Record limits per base on lower tiers force awkward workarounds for growing data
How people use Airtable at work
Operations managers: triage intake requests automatically
Add an AI field that classifies each submission by type and urgency from the description, and a second that writes a one-line summary. Route with an automation that posts urgent ones to Slack. Review a week of classifications before you trust the routing.
Product managers: summarize customer feedback at intake
Use an AI field to extract the feature area and the underlying problem from each submission in one sentence. Group by feature area in an interface and read the sentences; it is faster than reading tickets and safer than trusting a count.
Small-business owners: build a simple CRM by describing it
Tell Omni you need a customer list, a deals pipeline with stages, and a follow-up view sorted by next action date. Fix the field types it guessed wrong, then add an AI field that drafts a follow-up email from the last note.
Getting started
- Sign up at airtable.com and import a spreadsheet you actually use, such as a lead list or a project tracker. Fix the field types so dates are dates and categories are single selects; AI works better on typed fields.
- Add one AI field on a filtered view of about twenty records. Write the prompt like a job description: the input fields, the exact output format, and what to do when the input is empty.
- Read every output. Tighten the prompt until you agree with all twenty, then widen the view and watch your credit usage.
- Build an interface for the people who need the results, and one automation that sends the output somewhere useful, such as a Slack message when a record meets a condition.
- Try Omni on a fresh base by describing a tracker in three sentences, then compare its structure to the one you built by hand.
