AI built into the workspace where your notes, docs, and projects already live.

Last reviewedSeptember 2026

Notion AI is the assistant built into Notion, the all-in-one workspace many teams use for docs, wikis, project trackers, and notes. Its advantage is context: it writes inside the page you are on, fills columns in a database, and, most usefully, answers questions across your whole workspace and connected tools like Slack, Google Drive, and GitHub. Ask where the latest pricing decision was made and it finds the page, cites it, and summarizes.

In 2025 Notion pushed the AI much further. AI Meeting Notes transcribes calls from your laptop and writes structured notes into a Notion page. Research Mode drafts a document from your workspace and the web with sources. Agent features take multi-step actions such as building a tracker or updating pages. The writing tools (summarize, translate, change tone, continue writing) remain the everyday workhorse.

Two honest caveats. Notion AI is only as good as what your team keeps in Notion; a half-empty workspace produces thin answers. And pricing changed in 2025 so that full AI access comes with the Business plan rather than as a cheap add-on, which makes it a team-level decision. If your team already runs on Notion, though, the value is immediate.

Best for

  • Teams whose docs, wikis, and project trackers already live in Notion
  • Finding answers buried across pages, databases, and connected Slack and Drive
  • Turning meeting recordings into structured notes and action items in the same workspace
  • Everyday writing help inside a page: summarize, rewrite, translate, extend
  • Auto-filling database properties such as summaries, tags, and sentiment

Not ideal for

  • Individuals or teams that do not use Notion; the assistant has no standalone value
  • Deep analysis of spreadsheets and numbers
  • Free and Plus plan users who expect full AI access; most features need Business or Enterprise

Key features

Workspace Q&A and enterprise searchAsk a question in plain English and Notion AI searches your pages, databases, and connected apps, returning an answer with links to the sources. Permissions are respected, so people only see what they could already open.
AI Meeting NotesStart it during a call in any meeting app and it transcribes audio from your computer, then writes a summary, decisions, and next steps into the page. No bot joins the meeting; tell participants you are recording where consent rules apply.
Writing assistance in any pageHighlight text or press space on an empty line to summarize, fix grammar, change tone, translate, shorten, or continue writing. The output lands in the page, so editing is immediate.
Database autofillSet a property to fill automatically, such as a one-line summary, a category tag, or an extracted due date, and it populates as new rows arrive. Spot-check a sample; classification is good, not perfect.
Research Mode and agentsResearch Mode drafts a report from your workspace plus the web with citations. Agent features carry out multi-step work across pages, such as building a project tracker from a brief. Both are newer; check the vendor's current documentation for what your plan includes.

Pricing

Notion itself has a free plan; full Notion AI is included in the Business and Enterprise plans, while Free and Plus users get a limited trial of AI features. Older articles describe a per-seat AI add-on, which Notion retired for new customers in 2025.

Because AI now rides on the Business plan, the practical cost is the per-seat difference between Plus and Business; check Notion's pricing page for current numbers.

Pricing changes often. Confirm current plans on the vendor's site before you buy.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Answers come with links to the exact page, so checking is one click
  • Meeting notes land in the same workspace as the project they belong to
  • No copying between a chat window and your docs; the output is already in place
  • Connected-app search covers Slack and Drive, where decisions actually hide

Cons

  • Full AI access requires the Business plan, which raises the per-seat cost for the whole team
  • Answer quality depends entirely on how well the workspace is maintained
  • Writing quality is fine for internal docs but generic for anything customer-facing
  • Features have changed rapidly, so team training goes stale and tutorials mislead

How people use Notion AI at work

Project managers: build the status update from the workspace

Ask Notion AI what changed on the project this week across the tracker, meeting notes, and Slack, then have it draft the update in your standard format. Confirm dates and owners in the tracker before sending.

HR professionals: make the handbook answer questions

Keep policies in Notion and let employees ask Q&A instead of emailing you. Review the answers it gives to common questions once a quarter, and keep employee records out of pages the AI can reach beyond what your policy allows.

Product managers: capture customer calls

Run AI Meeting Notes during discovery calls, tag the resulting pages with an autofill property for theme and sentiment, then ask for patterns across the last twenty calls. Get consent for recording and verify quotes before they reach a roadmap deck.

Small-business owners: an operations wiki that talks back

Document how you do things (onboarding, invoicing, vendor contacts) and let new hires ask the workspace instead of you. Keep customer payment details and personal data out of pages the AI indexes.

Getting started

  1. Check your plan: open Settings and see whether AI is fully enabled or on a trial; if your team is on Plus, the decision is whether Business is worth it.
  2. Ask Q&A three questions you already know the answers to about your workspace; the quality tells you how well your pages are organized.
  3. Run AI Meeting Notes on an internal meeting first, with everyone's consent, and compare the notes with your own.
  4. Pick one database and add an autofill property (summary or category) to see how it handles your data.

Frequently asked questions

Is Notion AI free?
Notion has a free plan, and Free and Plus users get a limited trial of AI features. Full access to Notion AI comes with the Business and Enterprise plans. The separate per-seat AI add-on you may have read about was retired for new customers in 2025.
Does Notion AI train on my workspace?
Notion states that customer data is not used to train its models and that it uses vendor models under terms that prohibit training. Permissions apply to AI answers, so people only see what they could already open. Even so, never store or paste confidential client, patient, or employee data in tools your organization has not approved.
How does Notion AI compare with Copilot or Gemini?
Same idea, different home. Copilot answers from Microsoft 365, Gemini from Google Workspace, Notion AI from Notion plus connected apps. Pick the one that lives where your team's knowledge actually is; if your docs are in Notion but your files are in Drive, the connector makes Notion AI a reasonable hub.
Can Notion AI join my Zoom or Teams meetings?
It does not send a bot. AI Meeting Notes records from your own computer's audio while the meeting runs, then writes the notes into a page. That works with any meeting app, but you still need to tell participants and follow the recording consent laws in your state.
