The useful part is simple. A chat assistant turns your notes into a clean SOP in two languages, reads a WMS export and tells you which pick zones are dragging, drafts the carrier email, and builds a training quiz from your dock procedure. It does the desk work so you can be on the floor.
It has no idea what your building looks like. It will suggest a racking change without knowing the load rating, write a forklift procedure that contradicts the manufacturer's manual, and miscount a spreadsheet while sounding certain. It cannot see the puddle by dock door 4. Anything with a safety consequence gets checked by a qualified person against the actual standard and the actual equipment.
Two other lines matter. Employee data (injury reports, discipline, medical restrictions, Social Security numbers) stays out of consumer tools. And a schedule the model drafts still has to comply with overtime, break, minor-labor, and predictive scheduling rules, plus your union contract. What AI can do for warehouse managers, task by task
Writing and updating SOPs and work instructions
Dictate how the task is actually done, name the equipment and system screens involved, and ask for a numbered procedure with a checklist version and a 'what can go wrong' section. Have the person who does the job read it before it posts. Verify every safety-related step against OSHA requirements, the equipment manual, and your own safety program; the model fills gaps with plausible guesses.
Shift briefings and toolbox talks
Give the day's priorities, the safety topic, and any staffing changes, and ask for a two-minute briefing script plus a whiteboard version in short bullets. Ask for the same in the other languages your crew speaks and have a bilingual lead check the translation. Keep it to what the crew needs to act on today.

Knowing which decisions never go to the model
Why: Forklift operation, racking loads, lockout/tagout, hazmat storage, dock safety, and fire code are life-safety matters governed by standards, manuals, and qualified people. A confident chat answer is not a qualified person.
How: Write a short list of safety-critical decisions and post it. Treat AI output on those topics as a question list for your safety lead, never an answer.
Prompting with the real constraints
Why: The model has never seen your building. Useful output depends on you supplying the equipment, systems, headcount, and rules it cannot guess.

De-identifying employee and customer data before pasting

Cautions for warehouse managers
Forklift and powered industrial truck operation, racking load capacities, lockout/tagout, hazardous materials storage, dock and pedestrian traffic controls, and fire code compliance are governed by OSHA standards, manufacturer specifications, and qualified inspectors. Never adopt an AI suggestion in these areas without verification by your safety lead against the actual standard and equipment.
Injury and illness records, medical restrictions, discipline files, Social Security numbers, and immigration documents are confidential and in some cases protected by law. Never paste identifiable employee data into a consumer AI tool unless your company has approved that tool for that use. Use roles instead of names and keep the details in your HR and incident systems.
A schedule the model drafts still has to comply with federal and state overtime rules, meal and rest break requirements, restrictions on minors, predictive scheduling ordinances in some cities and states, and your collective bargaining agreement. AI does not know the rules in your jurisdiction. HR reviews every schedule before it posts.
Models miscount, mislabel columns, confuse units, and present a one-day anomaly as a trend. Recompute anything you plan to act on and validate it against what you observe on the floor before changing a process or someone's assignment.
Customer contract terms, rate agreements, and volume data may be covered by confidentiality clauses. Keep them out of consumer tools, and remember that the contract language governs claims and chargebacks, never the model's summary of it.
