A construction manager writes more than most office workers: daily reports, RFIs, submittal comments, change order justifications, meeting minutes, sub letters. Most of it gets done at 6 pm in the trailer. AI handles the drafting, so trailer time goes to checking instead of typing.
The fit is strongest for anything that starts from something you already have: a voice memo, a spec section, a photo, a sub's email. Multimodal assistants can read a photo or a drawing snippet well enough to help you describe a condition, never well enough to approve one.
The line is safety and engineering. AI does not design shoring, sign off on a lift plan, decide a trench is safe or interpret a structural detail. Those calls belong to the competent person, the engineer of record and the licensed professionals on the job.

What AI can do for construction managers, task by task
Daily logs and field reports
Dictate or type rough notes, add crews and deliveries from the sign-in sheet, and ask for the log in your company's format. Read every headcount and quantity; the daily log is a legal record on a claim, and a model will round or invent a number if your notes were vague.
RFIs and submittal reviews
Paste the spec section, the drawing note and the question, and ask for an RFI that states the conflict, cites references and proposes a resolution with a needed-by date. For submittals, paste the spec requirements and the product data and ask for a table of required versus submitted. Your review and the engineer's approval remain the deciding step.
Change orders and claims narratives
Give the AI the trigger, the original scope language, the dates and your priced breakdown, and ask for a narrative that ties each cost to a cause. Insert every dollar figure and quantity yourself, and keep bid pricing and the owner contract out of consumer tools unless your company has approved them.
Look-ahead schedules and sequencing
Paste the three-week look-ahead and the constraints (inspections, deliveries, crane days, sub availability) and ask for conflicts, missing predecessors and trades stacked in the same area. It is a checklist, not a scheduler; you still own the sequence and the durations.
Meeting minutes and sub correspondence
Record the OAC or sub meeting, then ask for minutes in your template: decisions, actions with owner and date, open RFIs and submittals, schedule notes. For sub letters, give the facts and the contract clause and ask for a firm, factual draft. Anything with contractual notice consequences is reviewed by your PM or counsel before it goes out.
Toolbox talks and safety documentation
Ask for a toolbox talk on a specific exposure at a specific stage for a mixed-experience crew. Check it against your written safety program and the applicable OSHA standard. AI can draft the talk and help organize a JHA; the competent person decides the controls, and the pre-task plan is signed by people.

Tip: Always give a proposed resolution; RFIs that offer an answer come back faster.
Change order narrative

Cautions for construction managers
Excavation protection, crane lift plans, fall protection, confined space, energized electrical work and structural modifications are decided by the competent person, the engineer of record or a licensed professional. AI may draft the talk or organize the JHA; it does not decide the controls or certify anything.
The owner contract, your estimate, sub bids and change order pricing are confidential and often covered by contract. Do not paste them into consumer AI tools unless your company has approved the tool; redact figures first.
Logs, minutes and notices get used in delay claims and disputes. Every headcount, quantity, date and cause in an AI draft must come from your notes and be checked. Instruct the model to flag missing facts rather than fill them in.
Multimodal AI can help describe a condition in a photo or a detail on a sheet, and it misreads dimensions, symbols and scale. Interpretation and approval stay with the engineer, architect and inspector. Injury reports and worker records stay out of consumer tools entirely.
